Two new musicals based on pop culture properties more than a decade old dominated this year’s Tony Awards nominations. “Mean Girls” and “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical” surprised everyone by landing a dozen nominations each — two more than the show that many expected would dominate this year: “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”
