‘Julius Caesar’: Orange is the new Bard

Julius Caesar

No, they don’t really wear orange. But Phyllida Lloyd does set her provocative new production of Julius Caesar in a women’s prison. The audience even enters via an elaborate security hall, with doors that open and close behind them and “guards” keep watching and reminding visitors of the facility’s rules. The gambit does get a tad too gimmicky in some places, but on the whole this is a rather straightforward take on a classic tale, with the prison locale resonating as much as (if not more than) the implicit gender-bending cast.
