‘First Date’: An oh-so predictable rom-com musical

Zachary Levi (in his Broadway debut) and Smash‘s Krysta Rodriguez manage a bit of onstage crackle, a kinetic in-the-momentness, despite the mediocrity of their material: an utterly predictable rom-com musical with a bland and forgettable score. As written, there’s no way that this mismatched pair would ever fall for each other since the only thing they have in common is a shared affection for a long-cancelled action-oriented NBC series with a cult-like following. And no, it isn’t Chuck — that would have at least goosed the paint-by-numbers plotting with some meta-fun. Here’s my C+ review on EW.com
