Tony-winning director Mary Zimmerman creates eye-popping Indian-influenced stage imagery for her new stage musical, but she struggles to reconcile the dramatic discrepancies between her two competing sources: the 1967 animated hit (with cheery tunes such as “Bare Necessities”) and Rudyard Kipling’s considerably darker 1894 children’s book.
